Avoid online scams and protect your money

August 10, 2026

How do you avoid online fraud and protect your money?

Scams no longer look the way they used to. We're no longer talking only about poorly written messages or suspicious phone calls. In 2026, frauds are convincing, fast, and highly targeted.

One wrong click can mean losing your money.

Most of the time, fraudsters do not “hack” systems. They exploit human reactions: haste, emotional moments, and trust. Urgent messages, offers that seem too good to be true, or phone calls that appear official are just some of the methods attackers use to persuade you to act without verifying first.

The goal is simple: to obtain your banking details or convince you to send money voluntarily.

The most common types of scams

You can be targeted through multiple channels, sometimes even at the same time:

  • You receive a message or email that appears to be from your bank or a well-known company, asking you to confirm your account details. This is phishing.
  • You receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from your bank, the tax authority, or the police, asking for codes or telling you that you need to "secure your account."
  • You receive a WhatsApp message saying, “vote for my child” or “vote for this petition.” You are given a link where you enter a phone number and a code. In reality, you are handing over control of your WhatsApp account, which will then be used for further scams.
  • You receive a message from a friend asking for money urgently. In reality, their account has been compromised, and the message is being sent by the attacker.
  • You see a pop-up or receive a message stating, “you have broken the law” or “you have a fine to pay.” It uses fear and demands immediate payment. Although it may display official logos, it is phishing.
  • You come across an “incredible” offer or an investment opportunity with guaranteed profits. Behind it is a fake platform.

Modern scams even use artificial intelligence, such as deepfake voice and video technology, to imitate a person's identity almost perfectly.

Warning signs that should make you think twice

Regardless of the method used, scams often have a few things in common:

  • Someone pressures you to act quickly.
  • The offer seems too good to be true.
  • You are asked for sensitive information, codes, or passwords.
  • You are redirected to suspicious links.
  • Communication takes place only through WhatsApp, email, or SMS.

If you feel pressured or rushed, stop. That is the first warning sign.

How to truly protect yourself

Protection is not about complicated technology, but rather a few simple habits:

  • Do not click links received via SMS, WhatsApp, or email. Go directly to the official website.
  • Never share sensitive information (codes, passwords, PINs, card details). Your bank will never ask for them.
  • Do not send money when pressured to do so, even if the request appears to come from someone you know. Appearances can be deceiving.
  • Verify any request through a separate channel (call the company or person directly).
  • Avoid making decisions under pressure. Most scams rely on impulsive reactions.

Why these scams work

Scams are not based on technology, but on human behavior.

Attackers exploit:

  • Trust in institutions
  • Quick reactions to urgent situations
  • Failure to verify information

Victims are persuaded to act in good faith, believing they are protecting their accounts or solving a problem. That is why awareness is the first step.
